Whiteboards are one of the most versatile and staple tools welcoming us with a fresh white surface to bring in new ideas for brand building and work schedules but frequent use of whiteboards can cause lines, marks, and colors that are hard to rub off by no more making it the same brand new whiteboard. The eraser used for cleaning the whiteboard does not help if the grubby whiteboard has accumulated stains, marks, and old smudges caused due to frequent use. The old shiny white shade can be restored through DIY whiteboard cleaning tips and tricks which is simple and inexpensive:

  • To remove the marks made by permanent markers, dried marks of erasing marker and pens, trace over the stains with a fresh new erasable marker. Writing over the stains with non-permanent markers will help to retain the clear whiteboard. Then allow the marker to dry as the fresh dye can help in erasing out the existing permanent marks along with it by rubbing it off with a cloth or board eraser.

  • Home-made whiteboard Cleaner- If you are not someone who cleans the board every week, then you might need to use a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water or a mix of warm soap water, glass cleaner, and peroxide to clean the whiteboard. Make sure not to use any wax-containing cleaners as it creates a disturbing surface.

  • Removal of whiteboard ghosting- Whiteboard markers release a deposit on the board even after erasing and this causes a shade difference between the used and unwritten areas. A combined effort of water and isopropyl alcohol helps in the effective cleaning of the whiteboard. Always try to pour the rubbing alcohol into a spraying bottle for easy application.

Other than isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, there are a few more popular cleaners for whiteboard cleaning:

  1. Hand sanitizers

  2. Acetone or nail polish remover that contains acetone

  3. Orange cleaners

  4. A mix of the dish wash liquid and water

  5. Glass or window cleaner

  6. Baby wipes

  7. Hairsprays

  8. Spray cooking oils

  9. Vinegar

  10. Aftershave

  11. Professional whiteboard cleaning solutions- Expo Solutions MB, Quartet, and Kleenex whiteboard cleaning set. These are non-toxic cleaning sprays used to remove stubborn stains and used to refresh whiteboards which are ideal for classroom and conference rooms.

Do not go for recommendations like baking soda, toothpaste, or coffee powders to clean whiteboards as they are proven abrasive and lead to scratches.

CLEAN WHITEBOARD FREQUENTLY

With the right care and maintenance, your whiteboard will be free of damage by providing many years of trouble-free service. Depending on the location and use of the whiteboard, it should be cleaned frequently. The board should be cleaned daily if it is used in a school whereas in offices, it is all about reminder notes and schedules which should be on the board for a time period, which causes a bit of hassle and in this case, once a week cleaning is required for better maintenance of the whiteboard.

LONG TERM CARE TIPS

WD-40 is recommended for whiteboards that develop a grubby look. Applying WD-40 with the help of a microfiber cloth can give the surface a deep clean and is considered the best method for quick and effective cleaning. This cleaning can be used once a week for removing whiteboard ghosting and traces of permanent markers.
