DIY methods to Deep Clean your mattress

A home is incomplete without a mattress and getting stains on them is a part of having a mattress. The mattress is a definite investment that we have to make as part of living in a home. In any family, it is usual for the mattress to get stains. It could be coffee stains to bloodstains. So making mattress cleaning a part of your home cleaning routine makes sure that your investment is protected.

We can clean the mattress either by ourselves using some DIY solutions as below or opting for professional cleaning services. Here we will discuss some DIY methods.

DIY method 1

  1. Start by removing all the sheets and bedding items from the mattress.

  2. If coffee, tea, or juice spills on the pad and makes recent stains, at once take away the beddings and wash them, and use applicable detergent or stain removing liquids and clean. check that you are not rubbing on the stain.

  3. The next step is to vacuum the entire mattress with your vacuum cleaner. Give extra attention while cleaning the seams and corners where all the dirt and dust accumulate the most. Adjust your vacuum attachments accordingly for this.

  4. After vacuuming check for dry stains and spots and clean them with the appropriate cleaner. You can use an upholstery cleaning detergent for wine stains or use any mild detergent and warm water solution for dirt or grass stains.

  5. Now after this step make sure to deodorize the mattress. You can use baking soda for this. Put baking soda on top of the mattress and keep the mattress near the window or outside under the sunlight, making them dry up fast and sanitize the mattress.

  6. Finally, after the baking soda has done its job correctly vacuum it and put the mattress cover on. And cleaning your mattress regularly to keep it away from bugs and stain damages.

DIY method 2

  1. For this method, you will need some tools like a vacuum cleaner, spray bottle, dishwashing liquid, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, laundry detergent, vinegar, brush, sponge, and a towel.

  2. Vacuum all the dust and hair from the mattress after removing all the sheets and pillows.

  3. Now start cleaning the mattress stain, accordingly for stains from vomit, urine, or sweat stain first of all spray water onto the stain and damp it. Then mist the stain with a solution of 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoon baking soda, and 5 drops of dishwashing liquid on it and gently brush it with a scrubber till the stain vanishes. After scrubbing, spray with clean water on it and blot it with a towel. For blood stains, you can use the same method as for urine stains but use cold water and solution, and for food and beverages stain use a mixture of 1 cup laundry detergent, 1 cup vinegar, and 10 cups of water and use it after 15 minutes. Blot the stain and remove using a wet towel then use a dry towel to dry it.

  4. Now remove the bad odor or smell by deodorizing it using baking soda.

  5. Finally, vacuum the mattress and let it dry, and then use it.

However it is best to clean your mattress periodically under expert supervision, that is getting services from a professional cleaning service. As they can do it properly and your mattress will be good as new after the professional cleaning, they provide steam cleaning, which is said to be the best method for cleaning a mattress.
